Ulla Deventer is a freelance photographer and artist based in Hamburg. Holding a Master of Fine Arts, she is a research student at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. Her work is focused on stigmatization of marginal groups – since 2013, she is doing an artistic research on prostitution in European capitals and Accra, Ghana. Hereby she engages with her subjects, building close, interpersonal relationships, in order to reveal unexpected views on prostitution and to counter the stigma. In 2017 she started „Butterflies Are a Sign of a Good Thing“, a collaborative project with women in Accra, who are dealing with prejudices and social exclusion, in addition to coping with the daily hardships of a poor existence.
